MEET OUR HOST FARMS

Walnitdale Farms - Alta genetics Showcase Host Farm
Walnutdale Farms
4309 14th Street | Wayland, MI 49348
Walnutdale Farms is the unique stop on this year’s Showcase Tour featuring two separate breeds. Their 1650 Holsteins are milked through the 50-stall rotary parlor at the main facility of this fourth generation family farm. Their 550 Jerseys are milked at a separate location a few miles away.

Five years ago, farm owner, Kevin Lettinga, founded Great Lake Cooperative to take control over marketing their farm’s own milk. Since then, the cooperative has grown to a total of five farms.

Prairie View Dairy
12850 S Parker Rd | Delton, MI 49046
Protocol simplicity and a focus on cow comfort help define the success at Prairie View Dairy. Pregnancy rates soar throughout the year by using a simple synchronization program paired with activity monitoring. The temperature-controlled curtains in the holding area, along with excellent ventilation and cooling in all freestall barns, and detailed stall maintenance optimize cow comfort. A brand new maternity and transition facility provides added care and comfort to the herd in that critical time in their lactation.

Schaendorf Farms
2730 130th Avenue | Allegan, MI 49010
Schaendorf Farms includes more than just their 2800 cows and 2500 young stock. John and Connie Schaendorf also own a large custom harvest business, providing custom forage harvest for farms throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. That is supplemented with their separate milk hauling business of 30 milk tankers and trucks. They recently began raising all bull calves born on the farm, and are at a current total of about 1300 steers

Tubergen Dairy Farms
Tubergen Dairy
1689 Bugbee Road | Ionia, MI 48846
A focus on effective farm succession planning allows Dennis and Doris Tubergen to share ownership and daily management responsibility with their children Kurt, Todd and Amber. With unique areas of interest, each family member takes ownership of a different area of the farm. Dennis oversees the crops and feeding; Doris and Amber manage all calf care and farm accounting; Kurt is in charge of manure and nutrient management and Todd handles all things related to herd management, including reproduction, the parlor and herd health.

Milk quality is a primary focus for Larry and Brent Simon, who were recently named one of just six recipients to win the prestigious platinum award for milk quality from the National Mastitis Council.

The Simons also focus on feed quality and nutrition. Aiming for a 24-day cut schedule and paying extra attention to bunker management are measures they take to maintain optimal forage quality.

Their 14/11 day pre-synch/ovsynch program paired with activity monitoring also help them achieve an outstanding 33% annual pregnancy rate.

Steenblik Dairy Host Farm
Steenblik Dairy
3488 N Hubbardston Rd | Pewamo, MI 48873
In 2014, Steenblik Dairy completed construction on an impressive 86-stall variable speed rotary milking parlor and new 12-row natural ventilation freestall barn to take their herd total up to 3450 milking cows. With the new rotary in place, their old double-25 parallel parlor became the hospital and fresh cow parlor. To maximize labor efficiency and give each cow the best possible care during that crucial transition period, they also built a brand new maternity and transition barn this year.

Double Eagle Dairy
Double Eagle Dairy
5742 S Pendell Road | Middleton, MI 48856
Strict protocol compliance allows Double Eagle Dairy to maintain their 30% pregnancy rate. They use a double-ovsynch protocol on first lactation cows and implement a pre-synch/ovsynch program with the extra shot of prostaglandin on cows in their second and greater lactations.

Knowing calves are the next generation of their milking herd, the team also puts a strong focus on calf care. They transitioned from hutches to brand new calf barns, which were completed in 2015 and implemented an accelerated feeding program on all calves at that time.
